Regional Perspectives on International Recognition and Quality Assurance

Abstract
In the European Higher Education Area, a variety of policies and standards aim to integrate and further develop fair and transparent recognition procedures as part of an overarching quality culture (e.g., ESG, 2015). Moreover, multi-lateral treaties and agreements between regions, countries and institutions are a feasible way to increase student mobility and international exchange. Which forms of cooperation and collaboration have proven effective in practice in the past, both within and outside the EHEA, and which might be more effective to enhance recognition practices? The roundtable will address these questions and exchange various experiences from three different world regions.

Prof. Alyssa M. Peleo-Alampay, Ph.D.
Dr Alyssa Peleo-Alampay is currently Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs (Quality Assurance) of the University of the Philippines System in charge of quality assurance for all of its eight (8) constituent universities in the country. She is also the Vice President of the ASEAN QA Association, a community of QA practitioners in higher education institutions in Southeast Asia.
Alyssa is also a Professor of Geology at the National Institute of Geological Sciences at the University of the Philippines, Diliman, Philippines.
Dr. Fabrizio Trifirò
Head of Quality Benchmark Services, Ecctis
Dr. Fabrizio Trifirò is an international expert in the quality assurance and recognition of TNE. He heads Ecctis’ (formerly UK NARIC) quality benchmark services and leads the agency’s engagement with key international stakeholders. Fabrizio developed the TNE Quality Benchmark, the first international scheme aimed at supporting the global portability of TNE qualifications.
Fabrizio sits in the Board of Directors of INQAAHE, and prior to joining NARIC, he was with the QAA UK for over 10 years where he led on the quality assurance of UK TNE and international engagement.
Aurelija Valeikienė
Deputy Director of Centre for Quality Assessment in Higher Education (SKVC), Lithuania
External QA agency and the ENIC/NARIC centre. Her expertise areas are external quality assurance of higher education, academic recognition, and internationalisation.
Currently is member of the European Commission expert group on micro-credentials and the Bologna Process peer support group on academic recognition. Served in working groups on structural reforms in EHEA, and in the Advisory Group to support Belarus.
Worked on the ENQA Board, is ENQA expert for agency reviews. Served as President of CEENQA.
Acted as expert upon invitations from the Council of Europe, World Bank, European Training Foundation, Europe-Asia Foundation etc.
Dr. Peter A. Zervakis
Deputy Head of Project MODUS, German Rectors' Conference
Dr. Peter A. Zervakis is the Deputy Head of the MODUS project in the German Rectors' Conference (HRK). He studied history and social sciences at the University of Hamburg (1984-1989). After longer study and research stays at the European Commission and at the German Historical Institute in Washington, D.C., he completed his doctorate at the University of Hamburg in 1992. From 1993-1998 he worked as a post-doctoral researcher for the German Research Foundation in the project South East Europe Handbook VIII: Cyprus. From 1999-2004 he was a researcher at the University of Bonn‘s Centre for European Research. In 2004, he was appointed as director of the Bertelsmann Foundation's European Projects. In 2006, he became head of the Bologna Projects of the HRK. From 2010-2014, he directed the HRK follow-up project nexus - "Concepts and good practice for studying and teaching". From 2014-2018 he was coordinator of the HRK follow-up project nexus - "Shaping transitions, improving academic success." and then deputy head in 2018. Numerous publications, inter alia, on inner-university reform projects in teaching and studies.
